Cabinet Door Size and Overlay Calculator

Enter the cabinet opening and the overlay to get the door size, for a single door or a pair. Already have doors? Measure one door and its opening to find your overlay.

How to calculate a cabinet door size

For an overlay door, add the overlay to every side of the opening: door width = opening width + 2 x overlay, and door height = opening height + 2 x overlay. For a pair of doors, take the total width, subtract the gap you want between the two doors (1/8" is common) and divide by two.

For an inset door, the door sits inside the opening, so subtract a small reveal on every side instead (1/16" per side is common): door width = opening width - 2 x reveal.

How to find the overlay you have

Measure the width of one existing door and the width of the opening behind it. Overlay per side = (door width - opening width) / 2. This is the same formula nuGO uses when you check your overlay during an order.

Worked example

A 30" wide by 30" tall opening with a 1/2" overlay and two doors: total width 30 + 1 = 31", minus a 1/8" gap = 30 7/8", so each door is 15 7/16" wide and 31" tall, with 2 hinges each.

Replacing doors you already have? Measure the doors themselves, not the openings: nuDoors makes each door to the size you enter. The calculator is for missing doors or for changing the overlay.
