MDF vs Wood Cabinet Doors

For painted cabinet doors, MDF and HDF are usually the better choice. They do not move with humidity the way solid wood does, so the paint does not crack at the joints. Solid wood wins for stained, natural-grain doors.

Are MDF cabinet doors better than wood?

For painted doors, usually yes. Medium- and high-density fiberboard (MDF and HDF) is made from fine wood fibers pressed into a uniform board, so it has no grain and barely moves with humidity. Solid wood expands and shrinks through the seasons, and on a painted five-piece door that movement shows up as hairline cracks where the frame pieces meet. Solid wood is the better choice if you want a stained, natural-grain look.

What are nuDoors made of?

nuDoors are made from 3/4" high-density fiberboard (HDF). Most profiles are routed from a single piece of board, so there are no frame joints to crack, and the surface takes a factory finish or your own paint evenly. Pre-finished doors come in the Signature (13 colors), Woodgrain (19 woodgrain looks) and Select Series; Unfinished doors are ready for primer and paint.

Do painted MDF doors crack?

The flat surfaces do not crack the way solid-wood joints do, because the board moves as a unit. The risk with MDF is water: if the finish is broken and water soaks in, the board swells and does not shrink back. That is why unfinished nuDoors must be sealed on every surface and edge within 24 hours of delivery, and why spills should be wiped up promptly.

How do I paint unfinished HDF doors?

Prime with a primer made for MDF/HDF, sand lightly between coats, and finish with a cabinet-grade paint. Seal the edges well: they absorb more than the face. The Refacing Academy has the full sequence.
