Is Cabinet Refacing Worth It?

Cabinet refacing is worth it when your cabinet boxes are sound and you want a new look for a fraction of the cost of new cabinets. It is not worth it if the boxes are damaged or the layout has to change.

Is cabinet refacing worth the money?

For most kitchens with solid cabinet boxes, yes. New doors and drawer fronts are what you see, so changing them changes the look of the kitchen, while the boxes, countertops and plumbing stay put. Doing it yourself, the doors for a typical kitchen in our estimates cost about $3,100 (median of 319 kitchens in 2026), against $12,000 to $30,000 for installed semi-custom cabinets (Block Renovation, 2026). It is not worth it if the boxes are water-damaged or you need a new layout: new doors cannot fix either.

What are the benefits of refacing?

  • Cost. You pay for doors, drawer fronts and paint, not new boxes and countertops.
  • Time. Once the doors arrive, hanging them takes days, not weeks without a kitchen.
  • Less waste. The boxes stay in your kitchen instead of a dumpster.
  • A real style change. Shaker, slab, slim shaker, fluted and more, in pre-finished colors, woodgrain or unfinished to paint any color.

What are the downsides of refacing?

  • The boxes stay. If they are damaged, soft or sagging, refacing hides the problem. Check under the sink and beside the dishwasher first.
  • The layout stays. You cannot add an island or move the sink by refacing.
  • Measuring is on you. Doors are made to the sizes you enter and custom doors cannot be returned, so measure carefully. Our measuring guide and printable sheet help.
  • Lead time. Made-to-order doors take about 7 to 10 business days to produce, plus shipping.

Does refacing add value to a home?

Cosmetic kitchen updates tend to recover more of their cost at resale than major remodels. Block Renovation's 2026 guide cites the 2025 Cost vs. Value report: a minor mid-range kitchen remodel recovered about 113% of its cost, against about 50% for a major mid-range remodel. Refacing is a minor remodel in that sense, though your local market decides.

How long does refaced cabinetry last?

As long as the boxes and the doors. nuDoors pre-finished doors carry a 5-year limited warranty on manufacturing defects in the door and its factory finish; unfinished doors carry 1 year on the door itself. See shipping, returns and warranty.

How do I know if my kitchen is a good fit?

Upload a photo to nuVision to see your kitchen with new doors and get a price, then check the boxes with the list above. If both look right, refacing is very likely worth it.
